Is it a Boy or Girl?!

I have been counting down to this day for weeks.

Ok, months.

To say I am excited is an understatement because, today is the day, should our little babe cooperate, where it's gender will be revealed!

But before you chastise me (because some have)...

Yes, I want to know the sex.
So many people have asked me why and offered their personal experiences of why not knowing the sex was such a wonderful surprise.  The entire time smile and nod and then politely explain my reasoning.  I  want to personify my womb with a him or her, rather than "it".  I want to decorate the nursery in a personal way for the baby and not be limited to gender neutral themes.  I want my friends to be able to give gifts and not be confined to gender neutral items, either.

Yes, I know its not 100% accurate.
I will see how sure the ultrasound looks for gender diagnosis before discounting the prediction.

Is all that selfish?  Perhaps, but its an option that I am given and not going to pass up.  In my mind it only makes the pregnancy more enjoyable than it already is (which is pretty darned enjoyable, actually).  Either way, I am positively giddy in anticipation of today's appointment.  If anything I'll at least get to see the little munchkin squirming away and have some more ultrasound photos.

My little bambino/bambina and I at 18 weeks

Some of you may be wondering...  What do think I am having?
Truth be told I have no idea and the wives tales haven't been too helpful.

And I am wondering... What do you think I am having?
Given some facts about my pregnancy thus far that are answers to several wives tales.
  • I haven't had any dreams indicating a sex of the baby.
  • I'm craving milk, anything with tomato sauce, and nuts.
  • The baby kicks more on my right side then left
  • Its more active in the afternoon than morning
  • I didn't have any morning sickness (praise the lord!)
  • Shawn isn't sympathetically gaining weight with me (but I don't mind)
  • My belly is shaped like a basketball
  • I can't tell if I'm carrying high or low.  Look at the picture and you tell me.
  • I've only had the chance to listen to the heartbeat once and it was 150
  • I feel like I look more amazing than ever
  • If you can't tell from my photo I think my belly is huge, but I don't have experience to compare to.
  • The Chinese Gender chart predicts a boy.
  • I have not done the drain-o or wedding ring test.
I'd love to hear what you think the baby might be!  And if you know any other wives tales about predicting the gender let me know.  They are quite interesting.

And no worries, I'll share the result of the ultrasound soon.  If you happen to know already (as in my close friends/family) please don't spoil it! :)

Well, you look like your carrying lower than I am....so I'm going to say boy. I'm so glad you are finding out because that's what you want to do! Pregnant women have every right to do what they want to do when it comes to finding out/or not finding out the gender! So many people are so opinionated, but it's not their baby! Can't wait to see some fun ultrasound photos! I have another friend who is finding out tomorrow, and my sister in law found out she was having a boy last week....so much fun news!

I'm so sorry that I haven't been following your posts very regularly...what a surprise to discover that you are expecting. You do look absolutely amazing! My last pregnancy was similar to yours...and I had a boy. So that's my prediction based on the experience of little or no morning sickness, a shining glow, big, round, out in front baby position. I also wanted to know the sex. It was great because soon after we found out, we named him. I'm excited for you and will have to stop by more often.

Jen you look beautiful! Sounds like your pregnancy is going a lot like mine did, except I was sick a little and could not eat Tomato sauce after my second trimester, the thought of it still makes me a little queasy! So I am going to guess GIRL! Good Luck!!

I will be checking to find out too....I remember when they told me it was a boy, after the appt. I was walking around doing a little shopping and my instinct was to look at every person I saw and shout out..."Do you know that I have a little boy inside this bundle"....it was the GREATEST. Enjoy the moment!!! Sharing your excitement.

How very, very exciting Jen! I'd say you are carrying him low, too. :) Whatever it is, you will be thrilled! From a mom of a son, there is nothing like that mother-son love. But I don't have a daughter to compare too. Whichever will be absolutely perfect for you! Looking forward to the results!!

You look fabulous! I had two boys and on my third and fourth pregnancies I thought I was having boys but ended up with two adorable daughters. So there is no way you can know, but I am going to guess a girl!

I found out what I was having all three times. Because I wanted to and I did not feel it spoiled anything. I think it made me more excited and it was great to have everything ready. You are absolutly glowing and I can't help but be very excited for you. Being pregnant was one of the highlights of my life. So glad your enjoying it, some people don't realize how special it is and what a gift. Anyway can't wait to find out what your having and I am going to guess a "girl". (Not sure why)

I'm guessing "boy"!!! You look great and I don't buy into that carrying high/low stuff. I always just all women carry different because all of our bodies are different. So very, very excited for you!!!

It looks to me like you are carrying high, but I have been told many times that I carry very low. So compared to me your high. But most of those old wives tales, are about 50/50 on accuracy, which really means they aren't accurate at all. But the Chinese Gender Chart has been right 3 out of 4 times for me. Either way it's so fun to know! I agree with you, I just have to know if I should buy pink or blue, trucks or princsses. And I figure, it's still a surprise you just get to know sooner!

You look wonderful! I didn't have the opportunity to have ultrasounds with my first two pregnancies. I was able to with my others and it was great knowing! I have no clue what you're having...but either way ENJOY your pregnancy! Can't wait to find out what you're having! :)

You look so great!

And I've been thinking girl ever since you mentioned how good you feel (and look). But I literally have zero sense of intuition, so don't read too much into that! haha

You look wonderful!. I can't wait to find out if its a boy or girl.

Don't worry about what people think about you finding out the sex....that judgment goes both ways. We didn't find out the sex (we are in the minority amongst our friends) and several people thought we were stupid for not just finding out. I saw it as the first of many parenting decisions that people will have (and share) their opinion on.

The Chinese gender chart also predicted boy for us and was wrong (we just had our daughter 9 days ago!) Several people said I was carrying like I had a boy. I'll guess girl for you just for fun! :)

I'd definitely say low and out front. I have carried both high and low, and you can really see the difference. Let me see if I can find a picture...

Okay. This is me at 18 1/2 weeks with my youngest. (way high and way interior):

For comparison, here's a shot of me with my second - much lower, and out front. Taken at around 20 weeks.
